Ultraviolet Blood Irradiation

Ultraviolet Blood Irradiation

Also known as Major Auto-Hemolytic Therapy (MAH), Photoluminescence, UVB, Extracorporeal Photophoresis, Photo-oxidation and UBI Therapy
Treatment consists of briefly exposing blood to ultraviolet ā€œCā€ light. The effects are long lasting and there are minimal side effects. This simple treatment is easily combined with other medical procedures and is economical, dependable and gentle for the patient.

How Is Ultraviolet Blood Irradiation therapy performed?
The UBI procedure involves inserting a small catheter (similar to giving blood) into a vein in the forearm. A small amount of blood, approximately 20 to 60 cc is removed with a sterile technique. It is placed into a bag with a sterile sodium solution; heparin is added to prevent clotting. The blood is returned to the blood stream through a quartz cuvette exposing it to ultraviolet light in a closed, airtight and sterile circuit. The entire procedure takes about 30-40 minutes.

How does UBI Therapy work?
1) Exposing blood to ultraviolet light creates an immune stimulating and germicidal effect when it is returned to the body. This generates a chain reaction that regulates the immune system making it more efficient to fight bacterial and viral infections in the body.
2) It may benefit autoimmune conditions by modulating an overactive immune system.
What are the clinical indications for UBI Therapy?
ā€¢ Allergies ā€“ inhaled, food or chemical
ā€¢ Arthritis ā€“ osteoarthritis, rheumatoid or psoriatic
ā€¢ Autoimmune illnesses ā€“ e.g. Raynaudā€™s disease, migraine, acute flare ups of arthritic joints, fibromyalgia, SLE, RA, Ulcerative Colitis, Sclerodermaā€¦
ā€¢ Cancer
ā€¢ Candida (yeast) overgrowth
ā€¢ Acute infections ā€“ influenza, cold, viral or bacterial infection
ā€¢ Acne
ā€¢ Asthma
ā€¢ Chronic intestinal inflammation
ā€¢ Diabetic retinopathy
ā€¢ Eczema & psoriasis
ā€¢ Fatigue ā€“ acute and chronic
ā€¢ Fibromyalgia
ā€¢ General detoxification
ā€¢ Herpes zoster and simplex
ā€¢ Infections of all types- (bacterial, viral, fungal, protozoa)
ā€¢ Injuries, wound healing
ā€¢ Lyme disease
ā€¢ Hepatitis
ā€¢ Macular degeneration
ā€¢ MRSA
ā€¢ Multiple sclerosis
ā€¢ Occlusion of arteries, (including stroke), thrombosis or increase in blood coagualation, thrombophlebitis,
ā€¢ Osteoporosis pain
ā€¢ Psoriasis
ā€¢ Toxic conditions of all types- snake bites or organic poisoning,
ā€¢ venous stasis ulcers

Some research studies have shown the following benefits of UBI Therapy:
ā€¢ Increases oxygen absorption into body tissues
ā€¢ Destruction of fungal, viral and bacterial growth
ā€¢ Enhances the immune systemā€™s ability to fight infection
ā€¢ Improves circulation and decreases platelet aggregation
ā€¢ Improves circulation by dilating blood vessels
ā€¢ Improves the bodyā€™s ability to detoxify and inactivate or remove toxins
ā€¢ Increase in: arterial and venous oxygenation, blood pH, lymphocytes, electrical charge on the red blood cell, hemoglobin, white blood cell count, lymphocytes, phagocytosis ability
ā€¢ Reduction of : cholesterol, creatinine levels, blood lactate, clot formation tendencies, blood viscosity, uric acid levels, fibrin levels, plasma viscosity, surface tension of the blood
ā€¢ Normalization or modulation of: immune status, glucose tolerance, and fibrinolysis.

What are contraindications to UBI treatment?
ā€¢ porphyria
ā€¢ photosensitivity
ā€¢ acute hemorrhagic diseases (such as hemophilia-but not including routine medical anticoagulation),
ā€¢ hyperthyroidism
ā€¢ subacute appendicitis and cholecystitis
ā€¢ immediately after a myocardial infarction (heart attack)

What to do after your major auto-hemolytic procedure:
Drink eight 8-ounce glasses of pure water in the 24 hours following your treatment.
Make sure you are eliminating properly ā€“ exercise, increase fiber, colonic therapy, herbal laxatives.
Take Epsom salt bath. You may take enzymes and minerals to help facilitate energizing process. Meditate; imagining how your body is going through a healing response after it received a magic powerful energy of ultraviolet light.

What are the possible negative effects after a treatment?
Most people feel better immediately afterwards. Occasionally, some people feel worse before they feel better. This is due to the body detoxifying and fighting infections, causing flu like symptoms,. Symptoms may include feeling tired or run-down, fever, and/or chills, called Herxheimerā€™s reactions. Negative reaction may last from a few hours to a couple of days. Some other negative effects may include bruising, discomfort or inflammation at the injection site, and while sterile technique is used any invasive medical procedure presents the rare risk of infection which can either cause local symptoms or in very rare cases systemic problems including itching, rash, fever, shaking spells and breathing difficulties. Patients may also experience transient hypoglycemic (low blood sugar), headache, and/or light headedness.
Effects of UBI treatment are cumulative, the more you do them, the more effective they are.

How many treatments will I need?
The frequency and number of treatments indicated depends on the condition and is patient specific. In general, acute conditions, like flu, or recent infections, usually require several treatments per week for 2 to 3 weeks. Chronic conditions, such as chronic infections or autoimmune conditions require treatments once or twice per week for 3 to 6 weeks, before re-evaluation.
